Have you ever seen a faded out old car? It never would have ended up looking so bad if someone had kept it up with car wax. The car needs to be protected from outside elements to keep the finish from fading and oxidizing.
So what is the deal on car wax? Is car wax the same thing as polish? Use some caution when you purchase your car wax. Car wax is not the same thing as polish. You really need to follow the application of an abrasive with car wax.

The car should be absolutely dry before you start waxing. Water and wax do not mix. If the car is parked in the sun or for some other reason the paint is hot to the touch, cool the car off before you wax. Heat burns wax onto the finish, with ugly and hard to remove results.
Protect any parts you do not want to wax with masking tape.

Polish has an abrasive in it that can damage your car if you do not follow up with car wax. Polish uses an abrasive and can leave the finish on your car even more exposed to the elements so you should follow it by using car wax. Some products have both polish and car wax and you can do them both in one step. Expert auto detailers say you should apply the polish and the car wax separately.

The basic properties of car wax can be attributed to a chemical compound called carnuba which has high amount of fatty acids in itself which gives the lustrous screen to the surface. This fatty acid of the chemical carnuba creates a solid coating between the paint and the outside matter which tends to stick to the surface which protects it, and gives it a smooth finish when car wax is applied to a vehicle.
